Juventus-Cesena: Seahorses Self Destruct In Turin

Posted on 07/11/2010

Juventus went into this game in the midst of an injury crisis that should have Andrea Agnelli calling out the plumber again. Sadly for Juve any faulty drains responsible for these this current spate of accidents seems to be at San Siro rather than Vinovo. Cesena punished some woeful Bianconeri defending to take an early lead but then threw away their advantage, first giving away a penalty then a needless foul reduced them to ten men.
Alessandro Del Piero slotted home the spot kick before a wonderful cross from Claudio Marchisio allowed Fabio Quagliarella to head home, putting Juve into a lead they never looked like relinquishing. It was far from a complete performance, perhaps understandable given the patched up nature of the team, but three points are always welcome, & a well worked third goal for Vincenzo Iaquinta gave the final score a much more flattering look.
Cinque Chiavi:
  1. Te two players unavailable in Europe, Quagliarella & Alberto Aquilani make such a huge difference to this team. The midfielders skill in possession – witness another pass completion masterclass, 70 of 74 (92.86%) – & the striker fast becoming the best source of goals Juve have.
  2. Marchisio & Simone Pepe may not be the most glamorous players, & are at opposite ends of the popularity scale but both men are completely indispensable to Delneri. Versatile, dedicated & intelligent, both players (along with Chiellini) are the very embodiment of the team spirit carrying the side in this difficult time.
  3. Speaking of indispensable, Leo Bonucci is exactly that. Much like Chiellini in the summer he has gone from baby of the back four to the main man in defence. He showed previously unseen leadership qualities today & is improving as a defender almost every game, & today won the penalty to begin the comeback.
  4. The red card not only gave Juve the numerical advantage but Cesena also took off the impressive Schelotto to alter their shape, a double blow to a team already struggling.
  5. Frederik Sorensen. Delneri clearly rates the big defender, & has singled him out for praise in recent weeks as well as having him on the bench in the past few Serie A games. His chance came today & he seized it, overcoming early nerves to put on an impressive display. A great debut & hopefully the first of many games in Bianconero.
