Juventus-Salzburg: Anyone Need A Red Bull?

Posted on 04/11/2010

With only ten first team players available it was clear this game would need to see Juventus display the same spirit & heart that saw them overcome Milan at San Siro on Sunday. Primavera midfielder Manuel Giandonato (‘91) made his first start for the first team & all seven substitutes were youth team players with Matteo Liviero, Marcel Büchel & Niccolò Giannetti all making their debuts from the bench.
The game was the kind of drab affair that is often stereo-typically trotted out about Italian football, but to criticise Juve for it is exceptionally harsh given the sheer number of missing players. The two cup-tied men – Fabio Quagliarella & Alberto Aquilani – were exactly the ingredients missing, an unpredictable striker & a midfielder schemer, both would have helped unlock a resilient Salzburg defence.
Cinque Chiavi
  1. Simone Pepe continued at left-back where he played on Saturday following the injury to PDC. He was solid again & his performance means the chances of a recall for Grosso or Salihamidžić much less likely.
  2. Milos Krasic was poor against Bologna & suspended last Sunday, here he looked lively early but faded & went off injured. He has a week to prepare for Jonathan Zebina.
  3. Nicola Legrottaglie continued to show just how vital he is to the squad, not just in terms of his quality as a player, but his leadership & guidance once again shone through here, his constant communication first with Pepe then Liviero a huge factor in the defensive solidity.
  4. Giandonarto is the jewel of Giovanni Bucaro’s team & it was no surprise to see him be the one given the start, & it speaks volumes regarding his quality that Delneri continued to field Marchisio out of position to accommodate him.
  5. At the top of this piece it states Delneri had ten 1st team players available, but in the case of Amauri that needs to be reconsidered….
Le Pagelle: Storari 6, Motta 5.5, Bonucci 6.5, Legrottaglie 6, Pepe 6.5, Krasic 6, Momo 6, Giandonato 6.5, Marchisio 6.5, Del Piero 6.5, Amauri 4 Subs: Liviero 6,Büchel 5.5, Giannetti sv
