After no Italian was short-listed for the Ballon d’Or, Claudio Marchisio has backed Mario Balotelli to become a potential future winner.

Given Italy’s World Cup failure and foreigner-packed Inter collecting the treble last season, no Italian made the 23-man preliminary list.

However, Juventus ace Marchisio believes there is one young Italian who could one day lift the Golden Ball.

“I think Baloteli could make the next list,” the international told Sky Italia. “If he puts a few things right then he could become a phenomenon.”

Inter have four players in the running for the award, with Wesley Sneijder a leading contender to be named the winner in January.

However, Marchisio has backed Barcelona’s Lionel Messi to keep a hold of his title as European Footballer of the Year.

“Although he didn’t have a great World Cup with Argentina, Messi is my favourite,” added the youngster. “He is the greatest.”
