Five Ways Juventus Can Beat Milan

Posted on 28/10/2010

As the Rossoneri and Bianconeri resume their rivalry, Carlo Garganese offers five ways Juventus can beat Milan….

1) Attack Full-Backs
Both teams are extremely weak in the full back areas, and although the loss of Milos Krasic through suspension is a huge blow weaker widemen than the likes of Simone Pepe and Jorge Martinez have penetrated Massimo Oddo and Daniele Bonera over the past few years. Forwards Alessandro Del Piero and Fabio Quagliarella should also pull out wide from time to time.

2) Bully Pirlo
If you give the 2006 World Cup winner time on the ball he will dictate, create and pass you to death. But, over the past couple of seasons as he has aged Pirlo has occasionally been vulnerable against physical opponents who press him. This will be the perfect opportunity for the reborn Felipe Melo to show everyone that he is back to his best.

3) Test Abbiati & Milan Defence From Corners & Set Pieces
Abbiati can occasionally be a liability from corners and crosses, and he almost always opts to punch rather than catch the ball. With Amauri and Vincenzo Iaquinta both likely to be missing, crosses from open play won’t be too successful. But Juventus can hurt the Rossoneri from set plays, with Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Felipe Melo all superb in the air.

4) Play With Intensity
A follow on from point 2, while Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane era fans would disagree Juventus have been at their best in the past few decades when they make use of their physical and tactical qualities, rather than their technical ones. Milan have been the opposite, and Real Madrid showed only last week that when you play against them with intensity they can struggle to keep up – especially a midfield containing veterans Rino Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Pirlo.

5) Instruct Chiellini To Rough Up Ibrahimovic

Juventus stopper Chiellini has an excellent record against Ibrahimovic, from the Swedish superstar’s time at Inter. The braveheart defender regularly frustrated and roughed up Ibra during some at-times brutal Derby d’Italia clashes. The ex-Barcelona man has a short fuse and can crack up mentally, so it is up to Chiellini to get in his face and force Ibrahimovic to lose his focus.
