Juventus general manager Jean-Claude Blanc reveals why Diego had to be sold for Milos Krasic and Christian Poulsen was preferred to Xabi Alonso.

“Diego would’ve had difficulty settling into Gigi Del Neri’s tactical system,” explained Blanc during a shareholder’s meeting in Turin.

The Brazilian was surprisingly sold to Wolfsburg after he had already played in the Europa League and for less than the club paid for him just a year earlier.

“We preferred to sell him in order to reach another player of his level, like Krasic.”

Another controversial signing was that of Poulsen, who was unpopular among fans and the media before his move to Liverpool.

“Claudio Ranieri made the decision,” said Blanc. “We told him both options were open: Poulsen or Xabi Alonso.

“After a few days the technical staff confirmed their decision was in favour of the Dane and so we signed the player who was most congenial to Ranieri’s style.”
