Del Piero: "Europa League is a distraction"

Ale Del Piero believes Juventus have been so poor this season that even winning the Europa League wouldn’t erase the disappointment.

The Bianconeri were tipped to fight Inter down to the wire for the Scudetto in the summer, but they currently lie sixth in Serie A, 14 points adrift of the League leaders.

After being knocked out of the Champions League and Coppa Italia, the Turin giants’ only hope of silverware now lies in the Europa League.

Interviewed by La Stampa, Del Piero was asked if Juventus are focused on winning what used to be the UEFA Cup.

“We cannot look that far ahead and if I was to make a really definitive analysis of our entire season then winning the Europa League would not be enough to get over the disappointment of not having challenged for the Scudetto.

“The League table says it all. It has been a strange year for us, but I hope that we have matured after all that has happened and I hope these things do not repeat themselves at Juventus in the future.

“We are yet to come out of the tunnel, but we have started to get some results. The League is still full of traps and there are teams that know how to play and put you in difficulty.

“There is Palermo, Napoli and tomorrow we have Fiorentina, who did not deserve to lose against Milan and Roma, and we all saw what happened against Bayern Munich.

“I hope Fiorentina are thinking about the Champions League,” Del Piero concluded.
