Cannavaro has endured a tough season at Juventus, leading many to question not only his captaincy but also his place in the Italy squad.
“There is a common axis in Lippi’s squad: Buffon, Chiellini, De Rossi, Pirlo, Gilardino, plus Pazzini, a player who knows who to play football. He will always be in my Italy side,” Boniek told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“Once upon a time the Azzurri started from Cannavaro. Now instead, if Nesta were to decide to come out of international retirement, I would take away his place.
“Anyway in general Italy aren’t badly put together. In attack, for example, you are in place with Gilardino, Pazzini, Iaquinta and Di Natale.”
Asked to reveal what he thinks Italy are lacking, Boniek replied: “Please don’t misunderstand me. I would say someone like Cassano. Not Cassano, though. I agree with Lippi that he shouldn’t be called up.
“It would take a person like Kaka, someone who can beat their man with speed and create danger,” he concluded.
