Lippi: ‘Juve have quality’

Marcello Lippi reassured Ciro Ferrara that “Juventus have quality” and will rise again, but insisted he was there purely as Italy Coach.

There have been reports for many months now that Lippi is lined up to take over in Turin when his contract with the Italian Federation expires after the World Cup.

Today he paid a visit to the club’s training ground, further fuelling the rumours of a handover with his former Azzurri assistant.

“I continue my meetings with several clubs. I spoke with Ferrara, but we only discussed the Italy squad.

“It has been two to three months since the last international game and I wanted to see how the injured players are doing, as obviously there are concerns for the Nazionale,” said Lippi.

“I will watch every match from now until the end of the season and then choose the best.”

One of them could be Amauri, who will only be given Italian citizenship from March.

“Everyone hopes for a place in the squad, but before even having that hope, Amauri needs to be Italian. I only speak of Italian players.”

Yesterday the Azzurri boss paid a visit to Milan and praised their enthusiasm, but he meets a Juve side in crisis.

“Juventus are the team with the most Italians, so potentially the biggest provider of players for the Nazionale.

“The Milan derby will give some signals for the Scudetto race, then there are teams like Juventus who need to get back to the standard expected of them.

“There is quality at Juventus, both in terms of staff and players.”
